The Thief

The Thief is a moving short story about a fifteen-year-old serial thief named Hari Singh who targets Anil, a struggling twenty-five-year-old writer. Anil welcomes Hari into his home, offering him a place to live while teaching him how to cook, read, and write. When Anil earns a large sum of money from selling a book, Hari succumbs to his old habits, steals the cash, and runs to the railway station. However, as he stands on the platform under a heavy downpour, his conscience strikes him. Realizing that the value of the education and trust Anil gave him far outweighs the stolen currency, Hari returns and secretly slips the damp notes back under the mattress. The next morning, Anil hands Hari a still-damp fifty-rupee note and promises him a regular salary. Though Anil knows exactly what happened, he chooses absolute silence and forgiveness over anger—saving a young life through the vulnerable power of unconditional trust.
